Single Diamond Dressing Tools
PIOFINE Diamond Dressing tools are made of high wear-resistant Southern African Natural Diamonds with well-grown points (mainly Octahedron and Dodecahedron). For the "Super - AA", "Special - A" and "Standard - B" ranges, we guarantee our customers constant product quality. We also offer our non-resettable "Economy - E" grade.

For precision dressing applications, we also supply diamonds with polished points, depending on application.
Choice of Diamond Size
Proper use as well as application of the correct size of diamond will determine its useful life. The necessary size of a diamond mainly depends on the dimensions and type of grinding wheels to be dressed, additional criteria being grain size, grade and abrasive material used. Relations between diamond sizes and dimensions of wheels have been chosen in a way as to render the multiplication product of diamond size and surface, proportional to that of the wheel diameter and width.
Recommended diamond sizes are given in the table:
Diamond Size - Carat |
for wheels with Diameter x Width product up to |
Wheel Dimensions (mm) |
0.25 | 2 000 | 100 x 20 to 200 x 10 |
0.35 | 3 750 | 125 x 30 to 250 x 15 |
0.5 | 6 800 | 200 x 30 to 350 x 18 |
0.75 | 9 200 | 250 x 35 to 400 x 25 |
1.00 | 13 500 | 250 x 50 to 400 x 35 |
1.5 | 21 500 | 300 x 70 to 500 x 40 |
2.0 | 42 000 | 400 x 100 to 800 x 50 |
2.5 | 55 000 | 500 x 100 to 900 x 60 |
3.0 | 70 000 | 500 x 140 to 900 x 70 |
3.5 | 100 000 | 500 x 200 to 900 x 110 |
Choice of Bond
Adequate setting is a decisive factor for a diamond's life. As thermal conductivity of diamonds is high, special quality bonding materials are required for them. The bonding material used by us guarantees fast seat while preventing heat build-up, thus keeping the diamond from getting too hot.
Application Hints
Care is recommended when starting the dressing application, as diamonds are sensitive to physical and thermal shock. Operations must be free from vibrations. Cooling must be started before the beginning of the actual operations and must be applied generously directly to diamonds.

When Single Diamond Dressers are used, fixtures should be fastened slightly below wheel-center, at an angle of 5 - 15 degrees, following rotation of wheel ("drag inclination"). Feed per dressing stroke should not exceed 0.03mm. For finer grain wheels, this limit is reduced to 0.005 to 0.01mm. Longitudinal feed depends on grain size. This will considerably affect the quality of the wheel surface. |
The following feeding speeds per revolution are recommended:
Wheel grain |
Feed in mm/rev. |
30 - 40 | 0.60 - 0.30 |
50 - 120 | 0.30 - 0.10 |
180 - 320 | 0.10 - 0.02 |
Resetting diamonds on time will lead to better tool economy. Once points have been abraded to an area of about 1sqmm, fixtures must be turned by about 90 degrees so as to set a new cutting edge into operation. A diamond must be reset when, after several turns, all cutting edges have been exploited. Failure to do so will destroy the diamond prematurely, leaving unused cutting edges sunk in the fixture.

Working areas on the diamond that have become too large will result in sub-standard dressing effects (reduced through smooth surfaces, or even burning of wheels due to frictional heat).
